Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee

1. Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,
Praising Thee, their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Drive the dark of doubt away.
Giver of immortal gladness,
Fill us with the light of day!

2. All thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain,
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

3. Thou art giving and forgiving,
Ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean depth of happy rest!
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
Fountainhead of love divine;
Joyful, we Thy heav'n inherit!
Joyful, we by grace are Thine!

This picture probably does not represent what you want your college experience to turn into, and certainly not the model of how your parents want to shepherd you.

 "Issues, Etc." , a Lutheran Radio Program had an excellent interview this past week that might be helpful for  youth who are beginning college and their parents.

"Pastoral Advice for College Students and Their Parents "

Listen here to an interview with Pastor Marcus Zill of St. Andrew’s Lutheran-Laramie, WY, who also has long experience as a campus pastor.

A resource for Lutheran campus ministry that he is in charge of is Christ On Campus.

The start of a new school year is a great chance to start, or restart, projects. I (Pastor Ramirez) fell behind keeping our website up to date, but with the start of September I hope and plan to stay on top of it .

Please check back a couple times a week for updates, information on upcoming events, and other pieces of interest.

Sermon Text: Luke 13:31-35

At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to Jesus, “Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you.” And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course. Nevertheless, I must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

            Deep emotion, the love of Christ for us is on display for us.  Here is he through whom all things were created.  Here is the Voice of creation speaking to his people, the deepest pleading and sorrow of one who can see the outcome of a disastrous life and choices and sorrowing when those who are deeply loved ignore his words and choose their own path.

            Many a parent I am sure has felt this sorrow over a child who has gone the wrong way.  How often has the wisdom of years called out for a youth to take the right path and not stray into trouble and yet the voice of experience and wisdom is not listened to.  How many a parent has cried over the stubbornness of their children as they watched a life they love destroyed.  If we sorrow over a child because our memories of hugs and kisses and playful romping have now changed to harsh words and the hatred of unreasonable fury poured out and love rejected how much more is the grief of Jesus over a creation that rejects the love of its Creator.

In The Name of The Father and The Son and The Holy Spirit.

Judas betrayed Jesus. He betrayed His Lord.

I remember when I was in high school I watched a movie. I don’t remember the title. I don’t even remember the actors or much of the story. But I do remember one scene which made me think very hard.

A detective is sent to investigate a murder of a woman. He can tell that the people who knew her know more than they are telling him, but they are being very tight-lipped. He can’t get much information out of anybody because they are scared of something. Finally, one man is willing to give him some information. This man won’t tell him the whole story, he’s too scared, but he does tell him this.

“When you discover what is worse than murder you’ll understand what happened.”

The detective replied, “What could be more horrible than what I already know. This woman was brutally murdered?”

“When you figure that out you’ll know what happened.”

The detective later figures out that it was the woman’s own family that had betrayed her.
